Ships and embarkation dates for regiments involved in the Second Anglo-Afghan War travelling to and from India
Researched and compiled by Garen Ewing © 2010 (updated Jan 2014)
The following table shows the dates of embarkation and disembarkation for British regiments who were involved in the Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-1880 and their journeys from the United Kingdom to India (including any service en-route, eg. in Africa). The primary source has been a range of British nineteenth-century newspapers (see sources at foot), so accuracy is only as correct as the reports, though they have been double-checked where possible.
The Suez Canal opened in 1869, but for several years some British troop movements still used the established overland railway route across Egypt. In 1873 the railway transit was abandoned and the canal adopted as the normal route, allowing troopships to sail directly from Britain to Bombay without changing ships at Suez.
